Single woman moves a 165 lb water heater?
Garden Tool Ergonomics: Easily move heavy potted plants in the garden
I wanted to test
whether I could move a 165 lb water heater by myself, along
with one BigSlider™ utility mover, its 19 ft rope…and
leverage. My husband was a little upset about my test idea
because we’d just spent a lot of money on the water heater.
He didn’t want it (or me) to get hurt.
|
So here’s
what I did. First I put the rope around the
length of the box and tried to pull. There was
too much friction between the box and the carpet
– the box wouldn’t budge – so I tilted the box
up slightly and pushed the sheet under it.
|
 |
|
With the
slider in place, I easily pulled the box to near
its tipping point and stopped. |
 |
|
I then
jerked the sheet out from under the box,
... |
 |
|
... and
laid it on the concrete to receive the corner of
the box. |
 |
|
I rested the
box on my thigh and very carefully (with part of
the weight still on my thigh, a straight back,
both arms, and bent knees) lowered the box to
the ground.
|
 |
|
The water
heater was so top-heavy, I couldn’t get it
upright. |
 |
|
So I
got inside the car, looped the rope around the
box (to make sure I didn’t push it over too far
or too fast), and pushed with my feet. It’s not
elegant, but it worked.
Here
the friction of the carpet certainly worked in
my favor. |
 |
|
Finally, for
the easy part! I threaded the rope through the
tail holes, around the box and through the
handle, and easily pulled the 165 lb water
heater over the concrete driveway and to the
other end of the garage. Mission accomplished:
one single 135 lb woman moves a 165 lb water
heater. |
